I graduated from Nottingham University with a BSc in Mathematics. I knew then that I wanted a career that had a financially orientated role whilst also utilising my interest in mathematics. An actuarial career seemed ideally suited and I subsequently decided to study a Postgraduate Diploma in Actuarial Science at the Cass Business School. I felt this would give me a firm introduction to the Profession and the type of work undertaken by actuaries. It was during these studies that I gained more insight into the world of General Insurance and I found it to be a very dynamic industry with a wide range of opportunities.
Aspen was formed in 2002 and as a relatively young company with a lot of prospects for growth I felt that it would be a very exciting environment to work in; I would be able to gain experience and knowledge that would be hard to match anywhere else in the market, particularly in the current economic climate. I was also particularly impressed by the actuarial department which placed a lot of emphasis on personal development. Whilst a very large department, it is focused on ensuring that each individual becomes exposed to the key areas of practice, namely Reserving, Pricing and Capital so as to attain a well-rounded learning experience without losing the depth of understanding required in actuarial work. Aspen also provides a very competitive study package which helps greatly when faced with the numerous exams required to qualify as an actuary.
On joining Aspen I have found that the graduate programme is well structured and very supportive to your individual development. In particular, the induction programme helped me settle in quickly and made me feel comfortable within the environment I would be working. I also feel it greatly reflected the professional and friendly social culture that I have continued to see over my first year. It is these aspects that have made my job so enjoyable.
